Cloma was waiting anxiously the next afternoon when the buses returned from the fields. She ran to Jared and said, “I’ve been takin’ care of that old man all day, but since noon I can’t tell if he's breath in’.”

Jared and Cy went straight to the room. Jared felt Rude’s wrist, and then listened to his chest. He turned to Cy and said, “He’s dead. I better go and tell somebody.”

Ten minutes after Jared had spoken to Jabbo, the giant black man backed the red pickup to the door. He and Clug loaded Rude into the back of the truck, then they covered the body with a piece of canvas.

Jared watched as the truck went through the gate and raced along the dirt road leading to the highway. It was creating a dense cloud of white dust. He turned to Cy and said, “I wonder how They’ll explain those wounds on Rude’s head?”

“Explain to who?” Cy asked.

“To the people at the funeral home, and maybe the police.”

“He ain’t goin’ to no funeral home,” Cy said. “He’s headed fo’ the swamp.”

“You mean They’ll just take him out and bury him?” Jared asked doubtfully.

“Either that or dump him in a sinkhole. Rude ain’t the first one to leave in that pickup. They’s been others. An’ it don’t make no difference if’n you daid or alive when you leave, you ain’t comin’ back.”

“You sure you ain’t just stretchin’ it a bit?” Jared asked, still doubtful.

Cy said, “Mistuh Jay, if’n they ever tries to put you in that pickup, you best fight like a wildcat. That ain’t no truck; it’s a hearse. If you ever get in that pickup, you ain’t never comin’ back.”

He said it so simply that again Jared believed.
